October 5, 2015
Toronto, ON

TORONTO, Ont. (October 5, 2015) – The Active Living Coalition for Older Adults (ALCOA) is launching Mall Movers in six different Greater Toronto Area (GTA) malls this October. This program is dedicated to the health and well-being of all Canadians by encouraging everyone to get to their local mall and move! Each group will walk daily from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and be offered a stretch and strength class once a week by a qualified fitness leader, prior to walking in the mall. Below are the first six program launch dates and locations.

  • Thursday, October 15 – East York Town Centre
  • Thursday, October 22 – Eglinton Square
  • Friday, October 23 – Bridlewood Mall
  • Monday, October 26 – Lawrence Square
  • Wednesday, October 28 – Jane Finch Mall
  • Thursday, October 29 – Woodbine Centre

Mall Movers will enjoy monthly themes that will help participants understand various healthy aging topics. Resources have been and will be created in Chinese, English, Gujarti, Italian, Punjabi, Spanish and Swahili to help remove the literacy barrier for many older adults.

This program builds on the warm, safe, barrier free environment provided by malls to deliver a walking and wheeling, health and well-being program. Mall Movers is unique in that it does not only focus on encouraging healthy individuals to participate — people with mobility issues, and seniors who think they are no longer able to be active are welcome to participate.

Mall Movers is supported by: Participaction; Heart and Stroke Foundation; Toronto Public Health; Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, UWO; Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability; Square One Older Adult Centre; Older Adults Centres’ Association of Ontario.  Hearing Solutions is a corporate sponsor of the program and will be providing free hearing screeners for participants at all participating malls.

Anyone who wishes to participate in the Mall Movers Program can register at www.activeagingcanada.ca or by calling 1.800.549.9799.
